A typical class

Some people envision martial arts classes as strict, scary, boring and repetitive. Not in our club, our classes are diverse, interesting and ever changing.

We start the class after we bow to each other. Michelle believes mutual respect is incredibly important. Traditionally students bow to thank their instructor for their teaching. Michelle believes this works both ways, without her students there would be no one to pass her knowledge on too. This is followed up with a warm up and some flexibility work. We then move onto speed and agility drills that also help with coordination, then we practice kicks, punches and jumping kicks on pads and other elite training equipment. Our classes involve partner work, where students help each other get fitter, challenge each other and as some of these drills involve a friendly competitive edge to them, it is exceptionally fun.

Taekwondo also has Poomsae/Forms/Patterns where students learn sequences as they defend themselves against four imaginary opponents, this is great for memory practice, coordination, speed, power and concentration. Students also spar each other in a safe and non threatening manner, this helps hugely develop confidence.

From a demonstration perspective, our students learn how to break boards, use Nun Chucks, Jo and Bo staff as well as flashy jumping kicks where they jump over high and long obstacles. This is particularly exciting and helps confidence, speed, agility and concentration.

Of course Taekwondo’s huge attribute is that it is a self defence. We have one of the best self defence programme’s in the country. We go over safety, being intuitive, verbal self defence etc. As students get older we go over serious attack situations to give teenagers the confidence to handle themselves if they are ever in such an unfortunate position. Master Michelle has had to use her skills in the past to help protect her friends and herself. She has hands on experience here.
